Yesterday 10th July , Ross on Wye was recorded as the hottest place in the UK, with thermometers reaching 32 degrees! With this heat wave set to continue staying cool is top priority so I have put together a few ideas for places to visit that are either shady or involve water! ![]()
If you’re visiting the charming town of Ross on Wye, there are plenty of delightful activities to beat the heat while making the most of your summer stay. Whether you’re a solo traveller, with family, or have your furry friend in tow, the Wye Valley offers something for everyone.
Start your day with a leisurely walk along the River Wye. The morning is the perfect time for a riverside stroll, as the gentle breeze coming off the water offers a refreshing escape from the heat. Stop under the shade of an old tree and watch the world drift by or perhaps dip your toes in the cool river by the rowing club. Don’t forget to visit the town’s Dog-Friendly tea shops and cafĂ©s for a refreshingly iced treat or a cold brew, one of our favourites being The Riverside.
For those who enjoy being on the water, you can rent a canoe or kayak, allowing a cooling venture on the shimmering river waters. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot playful otters or graceful swans as they navigate the gentle currents.
The Royal Hotel boasts some amazing views over the river Wye and is the perfect place for a refreshing sundowner. After sunset, return to Old Forge Cottageâa perfect sanctuary to relax and unwind with its secure garden, ensuring that both children and pets have space to play safely while you take in the gentle evening breeze.
Travelling a little way out of Ross on Wye you can find The Forest of Dean which has so many things to do and see and all under a canopy of shady trees! Explore the Sculpture trail, Puzzle wood, Clearwell caves or hire a bike and cycle the many traffic free trails. Another ideas would be to try  Big Pit National Coal Museum and go deep underground to escape the sun!
As well as The river Wye there are some other watery options….. Skenfrith Castle is only 20 minutes from Ross and has a river running behind it that has plenty of beaches and shallows and is perfect for wild swimming for the whole family, The Blorange is a huge hill in Abergavenny that has magnificent views and most importantly a wild swimming lake on the top! Or why not take a drive out to The Dragons Gate to swim in their lovely spring fed lake with optional sauna experience set in the most stunning location.
